ArsTechnica article about car stereos starts with what is apparently a 2003 Prius. What the heck is that thing sticking out of the dash? I would think that it was the shifter but it is missing a bunch of gears (only has P and B?). Also odd position and unnecessary size.

That is a first generation Toyota Prius. All that needs to be said.
Nah, I think B is for added “engine braking”.

Very strange indeed.

I don’t know what it is, but I hope it’s a self destruct switch.

Switch for the regenerative braking?

Oh that’s the forward collision cranial penetrator. FCCP for short.

Parking brake?

I found the manual online, it’s the “running mode selector lever”

WTF does that mean and why does It have to be so large?
![]() 08/07/2016 at 14:28 |

Power mode (haha) vs. engine braking. Why it's so large...probably because a first gen Prius was just an Echo and they didn't have anywhere else to stick the lever.

Yeah it’s odd. Must be park and drive, with a CVT.

This might explain it, B mode is a thing.

But where is reverse and neutral? Based on the labeling there is only 2 positions with a possible grey area in between.
![]() 08/07/2016 at 14:37 |

I think there is a normal auto selector between the seats, that just does the mode.

It’s just P,R,N, D and B for extra regen. I suppose you just look at the display on the dash to see where you are.
Priuses have a weird eCVT which uses one of the two motor/generators to vary the gearing so no other positions.
The Prius usually has a different arrangement with a button for P.

No, that is the gear selector, it is just missing the PRNDL label.
My guess is that you have to look at the gear indicator to know in what gear you are in.

Oh ok. I’ve been in a first gen Echo but never the Prius.

Can confirm, had to drive a friend’s Prius and was briefly confuz

They have similar styling but I’m pretty sure they don’t share any parts with each other.

They’re just where you would expect. Look at the display on the dash or do it by feel.

It’s the gear shifter.

B for “backing up” instead of “reverse”?

It is one of the poorest excuses for a gear selector i have had the displeasure of using.

I think this is to turn of battery regen like if you were going down a mountain you wouldn’t want regenerative braking on.
